If

If sadness were a person,

He and I would be  best friends.

We’d take the subway together

Go through life, full of wonder.
We’d sit by the shore for hours on end

and gaze at the horizon.

Then watch the sun turn red

every Wednesday afternoon.
We’d laugh while playing solitaire.

And run around naked on the street.

Talk about our daily lives

And our constant pretenses.
But he never found me,

Instead someone else did.

And “he” and I became a couple

Yes. Loneliness and me, did.
